Picture of the henna art (also known as mehendi) I had done on both sides of my hand and arm in Lajpath Nagar in Delhi, India. Henna paste was used and it took the man roughly 40 minutes to do. By far my favourite design I have had done until now!
What is Henna? Many people seem to be unsure of what henna tattoos are. Some also seem to think that it is chocolate but it is not. Henna tattoos are temporary tattoos which are created using henna paste. Henna paste is a natural substance, made from the henna plant. This substance is often used to dye the skin, hair, nails and clothes.

How does it work? You apply the henna paste on the skin (using a cone similar to a cake decorating cone) and leave it there to dry for 30 minutes to 3 hours (depending on the size of the design). During this time, the henna paste stains the skin leaving a brown/orange colour. After removing the dried paste, the stain of the design will get dark over night.
Why henna tattoos? Henna tattoos are a good alternative to those who don't want or can't have real, permanent tattoos. Henna tattoos fade after about 3 weeks and are very popular in Arabic and Indian cultures. The women mostly have henna tattoos done for celebrations and religious ceremonies (weddings, engagements, Diwali, Eid, etc). You also often see them at holiday destinations on the beach.
28 May 2012: I am very grateful for the daily deviation and all that lovely comments I have received so far. Thank you! For those who don't agree: "If you have a problem with a particular Daily Deviation feature, do NOT leave your disapproval among the other comments on the piece. It is disrespectful to the artist featured, the person who chose it and/or the person that suggested it". This actually says in the deviartArt rules.. so if you think I am breaking any rules, please think twice before voicing your disapproval as you will be doing that yourself. Thanks
